Atlas VPN Debuts MultiHop+ for Added Layer of Internet Privacy and Security

VPN provider Atlas has launched its newest feature, MultiHop+, designed to create an added layer of internet privacy and security for its subscribers and others who use the service’s proprietary Atlas software on their devices. The new service will be free to all existing Atlas users. However, new customers will pay an additional $10 per month in order to take advantage of the new protocol, effective immediately. What’s more, a complete list of supported devices and operating systems will be announced in January 2018.

What is VPN?

A virtual private network (VPN) extends a private network across a public network, such as the Internet. It enables a computer to send and receive data across shared or public networks as if it were directly connected to the private network while benefiting from both cost-effectiveness and topology transparency. Software running on an endpoint device. Such as a router or firewall, allows multiple nodes to establish outgoing connections across a TCP/IP or other types of networks in such a way that incoming connections from any node are accepted by all other nodes. An outgoing connection from one node in some cases is forwarded via two separate physical connections over two separate networks to another node.

How does it work?

Atlas has always offered a secure, encrypted connection that can mask your location and provide unfettered access to online content. Our multi-hop design creates a private tunnel from your device to our servers. Once you’ve created a connection with Atlas. You can route your traffic through any one of our 250 nodes in more than 100 countries around the world. Making it impossible for anyone who might be snooping on an insecure network to see what you’re doing. For added privacy, we don’t record any metadata about your activity–not even port numbers–so there’s no way to tie activity back to an individual user or device. Your personal information is protected through military-grade encryption on all sides so that only you and Atlas control who sees what information when you use our services.

What are the advantages?

Many VPN services are based on a hub-and-spoke design. This means that your data travels to a central server before exiting onto the public internet. It can be faster in some cases, but is often less secure; if you’re in an unstable place, like China or Syria. It’s easy for your traffic to be blocked by an external actor. That’s where Atlas comes in: our private network isn’t hosted by third parties. So no one can monitor or block you. This way we’re never trapped by any single nation-state. MultiHop+, meanwhile, extends that model further: it uses its own secure routing protocol to establish multiple paths between your computer and our servers. Making it incredibly difficult to block any one of them while keeping connection speeds high.

Where can I get it?

Atlas, one of our favorite providers, has taken on privacy by adding a new feature to its secure service called MultiHop+. The protocol gives customers added protection by using two proxies rather than one. When an internet-connected device connects to Atlas’s service it hops through two different proxy servers. That way if someone were to try and monitor a user’s activity with one. They would only see encrypted information from that first server. After that data is passed on from server number one to server number two all future communication between those devices is encrypted. Making it even more difficult for hackers or snoopers to intercept any private details.

How do I install it?

Atlas MultiHop+ is easy to install. Simply download our app, press a button, and let us do all of the heavy lifting. We’ve designed our protocol to be easily installed on any software platform or operating system with minimal technical skills. All users have to do is press a button. The rest is taken care of by our proprietary technology. If you’re interested in learning more about how it works, we’ve included instructions below
